Goethe-Institut Testing

The German Department at the University of Pittsburgh is now an officially authorized testing center by the Goethe Institut. We typically offer examinations at the A2, B1, B2, and C1 levels once a year. These exams are designed to demonstrate proficiency in German, and are recognized all over the world. Note: The exams are open to anyone, not just Pitt students.

Our next testing date will be November 12/13 (typically we hold the oral exam on a Friday afternoon/early evening, the written parts (listening, reading, writing) on a Saturday morning).

If you are interested in taking the exam at this time, please fill out this questionnaire, and send a check or money order to this address:

Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences
Division of Humanities - Fiscal
c/o Kristin Hopkins, Fiscal Manager
4200 Fifth Avenue, 526 Cathedral of Learning
Pittsburgh, PA 15260

Checks should be made out to the University of Pittsburgh. They should indicate that this is for the Goethe Exam in the memo line.

We will need to receive the check or money order by October 15 so we can order the exams from the Goethe Institut in New York in time.

The cost will be as follows:

If you are a student at the University of Pittsburgh, Chatham University, or Mt. Lebanon HS:

A2: $120, B1*: $140, B2*: $150, C1: $160

For everyone else:

A2: $180, B1*: $200, B2*: $220, C1: $250

*It is also possible to take individual modules of the B1 or B2 exam. Please get in touch to discuss the details.

Note: Students and Faculty at Pitt are either vaccinated or tested regularly for Covid 19.We do not require it of guests, but we would strongly encourage you to follow the same health guidelines. Masking and social distancing will be required at all times, including the oral exam.
