Study Abroad Spotlight

Maymester 2019

Pitt’s Maymester in Munich integrates intensive language studies with fun and food for thought. Not surprising, this study abroad program is a clear winner with Pitt German students.

This new four-week study abroad program inaugurated in 2018 takes students to the beautiful and exciting Bavarian city of Munich. Students on all language levels from beginning to advance can come along since Pitt partners with the Goethe Institute for the delivery of appropriate level language courses. In addition, the Pitt faculty members who lead the group (Dr. Batista, Dr. Lukic and Dr. Kurash in the past) teach a course on the history of Munich and its region in English for all students. Field trips range from enjoying the splendor of King Ludwig II.’s Castle Neuschwanstein and the sunny beauty of the Englischer Garten to the reminder of Germany’s murderous Nazi-past - the KZ Dachau. This full-immersion program allows students to improve their linguistic abilities and knowledge of German culture while experiencing the thrill of living in a foreign metropolis. We look forward to another Maymester in 2020!

And this is what one of the participating students, Emilia Fernandez, says about Pitt in Munich: “Whether it be through intensive language courses at the Goethe-Institute, walking along the Isar river, visiting castles, or enjoying some German cuisine with friends, there was never a dull moment throughout the trip. Pitt in Munich was essential to my German language learning and has shaped both my academic and personal experience at Pitt.”
