Recent Undergraduate Scholarship Awards

  • Summer 2020: Philosophy and Interdisciplinary German Studies Major, Max Nowalk, received a Brackenridge Fellowship to work with Professor Nandi Theunissen (Philosophy) on a project titled “Principles of Practical Reason in Kantian and Humean Constructivism.”
  • Spring 2020: Will Sumner (German Certificate) has won a prestigious Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) award.
  • Spring 2019: Graduating senior David Skrovanek was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the University of Applied Sciences in Dresden, Germany next fall.   • Spring 2019: German certificate student Emilia Fernandez received the Elizabeth Wylie-Ernst award for study abroad in Germany.
  • Spring 2019: Graduating seniors and German majors Eleanna Melcher and David Skrovanek received the Lore Foltin Award for Academic Excellence.

  • Spring 2017: German minor Susie Pisarcik received the German Chancellor Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Susie's proposed research will analyze and parallel the integration systems in place for refugees allocated to rural and urban settings in Germany.   • Spring 2017: Graduating senior German major Tom Elvins was awarded a DAAD scholarship for further study and training. Next year, Tom will pursue a Master's Degree at the University of Leipzig. For more information about the DAAD, click here and here.
  • Spring 2017: German majors Nathaniel Henderson and Zebulon Browne received the Ruth Kuschmierz Travel Award for summer study abroad.  This summer, Nathaniel and Zebulon will study abroad in Augsburg, Germany.

  • Spring 2016: German majors Erin McMahon and Hana Mujkovic received the Ruth Kuschmierz scholarship for study abroad.  This summer, Erin will study in Salzburg, Austria through AIFS, and Hana will study at the Freie Universität Berlin.

  • Fall 2015: German major Tom Elvins received a Brackenridge Fellowship for the Spring 2016 semester.  Tom will undertake research with Dr. Ljiljana Duraskovic investigating the transposition of East Slavic linguistic features to a South Slavic document produced in 1219, called the Svetoga Save.   • Summer 2015: April 2015 certificate graduate Erica Stevens won third prize in the DAAD Essay Contest - Reunification in 250 Words or Less.  More than 2,000 people participated in the online vote for the winners of the contest.   • Summer 2015: German minor Nikita Constantini was awarded a Benjamin A. Gilman International scholarship. Nikita will study Metropolitan Studies and Architecture in Berlin, Germany and conduct an individual research project concerning Dark Tourism in Nuremberg. To learn more about the Gilman Scholarship, click here.

  • Spring 2012: German major Valerie Alstadt received a DAAD university summer course grant for summer courses at a German university. German major Zachary Haddad was recognized as a DAAD Young Ambassador.  Young Ambassadors are students who have recently studied in Germany and return to promote study in Germany at their home universities.   • Summer 2011: German major Meghan Leinbach was awarded a Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) for Young Professionals scholarship. The CBYX is a full-year work-study scholarship program with a strong focus on cultural exchange. To learn more about the CBYX program, click here.
