Undergraduate students majoring or minoring in German can count on personalized advising, individualized attention from our faculty, small class sizes, and project-based learning.

- A curriculum that helps students develop German language skills and intercultural competence in courses dealing with literature, film, culture, the social sciences, and business in the German-speaking world;
- A wide range of study-abroad opportunities from faculty-led summer programs (German Language and Culture in Munich), partner programs (Heidelberg, Freiburg, Dortmund), multiple programs offering international internships, direct enrollment programs in German Universities (Augsburg), and a variety of other partner programs;
- Generous financial support for study abroad, tuition, and other undertakings, via German Department Scholarships (i.e. the Kuschmierz, Foltin, Wylie-Ernst scholarships, Maltz);
- A proven track record of students winning competitive national and international scholarships (i.e. Fulbright, CBYX, DAAD, DAAD-RISE, German Chancellor’s Fellowship, Gilman Scholarship, etc.);
- Pitt German is a Goethe Institut Testing Center, where students and the members of the community can have their language proficiency assessed and receive an internationally recognized language certification of their proficiency;
- Community-building events, like weekly German Conversation Hour (Laber Rhababer), Oktoberfest, the German Play, Germany on Campus (event series with the German Embassy), and the Student Showcase event, and
- Networking opportunities through free membership in the German American Chamber of Commerce for all degree students.
